These are small things in the big picture, but nonetheless it's the combination of all these small artifacts that make up Brentford's history - come to that anywhere else too. They could so easily have ben dug out and removed. Cast iron posts like these are rarely in concrete, usually a deep robust base and compacted hardcore. The whole ethos of a conservation are is to preserve what remains, and attempt retain the aesthetic style and character of an area. It's not the same as grade listing. Conservation areas exist in all sorts of areas. There are even council estates. Ironically, a private resident has to jump through hoops to make changes to their property and even the rears have to conform to conservation guidelines (even though the vast majority of extensions in St. Paul's exist prior to conservation standards.) This has a good result, many more recent alterations fit the houses well and quality has improved. But when it comes to council property, it's a case of slash and burn and stick any old tosh in it's place. And it really isn't good enough. |
