Whatever the facts of this matter there must inevitably have been some people who didn't vote for Ann Keen as a result of the expenses issue. So the question which must logically be asked is: 1. Would a candidate other than Ann Keen have attracted more votes than she did, possibly enough to hold on to the seat? OR 2. Were the votes that were lost to her offset by votes from sympathetic people who felt even more inspired to vote for her than they may otherwise have been as a result of the flak she had received, whether justified or not? The second possibility should not be discounted. In local elections that I have contested I have invariably been the subject of most of the personal attacks and I have topped the poll amongst the ICG candidates in my ward on every occasion. Whatever the explanation it is surely a fact that Ann Keen came closer to holding her seat than most people had expected? |
