| This is nothing new but there seems to be an avoidance of helping those nearer to home i.e. neighbours. When we were kids my mother regularly baked and made extra items of hot or nutritious food for three or four elderly and lone neighbours. We used to drop them round. Other Mums did the same for their neighbours and all kept a look out for them. I remember this was just a Christmas thing but then when the power cuts of the 70s came along it became a not just christmas thing and not just for the elderly but anyone struggling- flu was bad that year. After that it just carried on for many years but the breakdown in neighbours and the other priorities in the past 20 years has eroded that hugely. But maybe things on a really local scale Ie your street or two is better and will cost far less if co-ordinated with a few others in each street? |
