Thanks Frank, and obviously your choice how you travel. Without wishing to sound accusatory - I really don't criticise your perfectly reasonable choice - I could make a case that your driving a car is 800 times more likely to kill 'someone' than cycling (ie 9500 divided by 12). You might argue - hang on, there are 1 million drivers every day in London (no idea of the actual numbers, and I can't find numbers of TfL website, despite a response to a FOI request). I might counter that many or most of the 12 were caused by bad car/commercial vehicle driving. Anyway, you might say (though I'm sure you're not so self-centred) - OK people are killed by pollution but not me, as I'm safe in my car. I might respond - hang on, have you seen this report?https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-35504768 This report concludes "The NO2 measurements from inside the smogmobile promote green commuting with the message that if you drive your polluting car into the city, not only are you harming the environment but you may be damaging your own health [there is more poisonous NO2 inside the car than outside!] Ben Barratt put it like this: "It's better for the environment if you leave your car at home and better for your health. It exposes you to less air pollution, you're not contributing to the problem, and you are getting the benefits of exercise." |
