Sadly, I have tried, and I mean really tried to cope without a car. The nearest car club point is well beyond walking distance and the club does not offer automatic vehicles. I co-authored a book on Teleworking while working with The Henley Business School back in 1988 and practised what I preached, only travelling into the office when absolutely necessary. I have a bus stop within 'hobbling' distance but where would it take me? Three buses would take me to to a point a fair walk from the one accessible station in the whole of the London Brough of Ealing and only then to the platform heading out of London. A trip to see my grandchildren (something that I do weekly), which, by car, takes around 30-40 minutes door-to-door would necessitate a public transport journey of almost three hours (two hours and forty-seven minutes according to TfLs Journey Planner) and I would then either need to be picked up from the station at the other end or get a cab. I fully agree abut the Chelsea Tractors dropping off the 'little darlings' and I would establish and no parking zones around every school with the sole exception of those transporting children with disabilities. I recognise that mine may be the last generation where car ownership is the 'norm' but I really fear for those less able to use public transport in the future if we do not radically improve access for all. |
