I may not be your typical motorcyclist as I am 48 and have only been motorcycling for 7 years. My observation would be that motorcycling training is very basic (a one day course, which is nearly impossible to fail gets you on L plates for 2 years), and that there are a lot of riders out there who have poor understanding of road safety. Having done the full, unlimited engine size motorbike test about 5 years ago, the instuctors were able to impart a much better understanding of road safety. This is to someone who has bee a car driver for several decades preceding this. I take the point that death/injury statistics are poor, but that is largely due to poor training amongst L plate drivers. Riders who ride defensively, assuming that other vehicles do not use their wing mirrors when changing lanes (often because they are texting on their phones) are quite safe. Defensive riding is a very effective and overlooked part of training. I would want motorcycle training (especially the L plate rules) tightened up.
