"The ICG bloke Dave Cox came across as very personable and sincere but I was worried about his 'policies' which were really - the council should do what you the voters tell us: it sounds very laudable but actually voters don't agree and often have conflicting interests. The role of councillors is surely to try and reconcile these and find the best compromise" Politicians tend to take comfort from the belief that communities cannot resolve issues by themselves because different people have different views, and that therefore they need a political guiding hand to lead them towards the light. It is of course a nonsensical argument. Politicians themselves often disagree with one another, and yet somehow they are able to consider options in a rational way and take decisions. So then can the rest of us. In truth objections such as these are more about the role of a small self-appointed elite and its fear of becoming superfluous. |
