I only stayed for the first half. Personally I thought the tory, Gabriella Giles, was pretty useless and she came across to me as very condescending, deigning to bring city expertise for the benefit of the great unwashed. She also was unable to answer half the questions because she didn't seem to know the area nor have done any research. The ICG bloke Dave Cox came across as very personable and sincere but I was worried about his 'policies' which were really - the council should do what you the voters tell us: it sounds very laudable but actually voters don't agree and often have conflicting interests. The role of councillors is surely to try and reconcile these and find the best compromise. Both the green and the LD (didn't get their names) came across as sincere and well informed no-hopers. I believe they would both make decent councillors but they are in the wrong parties! Mel Collins came across very well to me, as a man who has been doing it for many years, working hard with a variety of groups and issues, and doing his level best for an area he clearly cares deeply about. Of course, you might say I'm biased - fair enough, I'm a Lab member - but that was my honest take on proceedings. |
