"Water firms told; stop huge payouts to foreign owners" headline in yesterday's 'i'. The former DG of OFWAT has made a "damning indictment" at the state of the industry, pity these people don't find their backbone when they're actually doing the job??? Apparently many water companies have racked up massive levels of debt to pay handsome annual returns to shareholders. "The report cited Thames Water which has requested taxpayer support for its "super sewer" project - because it can't raise the investment needed from the financial markets - despite bumper profits over a number of years. TW also wants to increase customer bills by £80 a year to pay for the work." Why should taxpayers be asked to support a privatised industry? We are already subsidising the privatised rail industry in parts - yet support for the public sector which we all have a stake in is constantly under attack from the government. These greedy companies should be told to take a hike in no uncertain terms - anyone want to bet that won't happen? |
