I use the Toy Library every week and am very concerned about its possible closure, users are currently emailing local councillors to see if any funds can be found to stop the toy library from closing, and to express their feelings. Of course we will be willing to do fundraising events but bigger funding is also required for the toy library to carry on . It is so sad that a well used amenity may be closed. This morning 24 families were present. The children were playing together both indoors and out and it was so upsetting to think these children will soon not be able to do this.I feel the local council/buisnessess should be supporting this project play is so important and it is well known the first years are when children develop the most. With all the recent and ongoing developments in Brentford there must be funds allocated for local community projects which local families and children use. I am not fully aware of why funding is not forthcoming to such a valuable resource to under fives and their families but I am aware their is a new government funding for two year olds coming into force next year.Is this affecting funders decisions??? or is there just no funding for children's services . I read the following about the new provision for two year olds " the Government has now committed to extending this to around 20 per cent of the least advantaged two-year-olds, around 150,000 children from September 2013. In May 2012 the Government confirmed that two-year-olds who live in households which meet the eligibility criteria for free school meals will be entitled to a free early education place, along with children who are looked after by the state. " I would like people to be aware that this will not help many of the children who currently use the toy library, they will not be in this criteria, I also feel it unfair that this new funding is based on whether a child is entitled to free school dinners! I have spoken to many families and it is evident that many low income families who work are not entitled to free school dinners. I would ask if local residents have any comments about the closure to please speak up before it is too late. |
