I often wonder if the Olympic Games were met with such apathy in the past ?. I don't know the figures, but presumably the cost of hosting the Games back in the 1920's or 30's was proportionally similar to nowadays ?. I just wonder if generally we are all more cynical/miserly these days when it comes to the Olympics, and instead of being proud that the country has been awarded the Games all we think about is the perceived adverse impact it will have on our day to day lives ?. We last held the Games in 1948 so it's about time we hosted them again, for many of us it will be the only time we do in our lifetimes. I can't afford to go to any of the events and didn't even apply for tickets, but I still hope the Games are a positive showcase for the country, hope to see the flame etc. |
