| There has been an increasing trend over recent years for many politicians across the spectrum to walk away from political office even though they had every chance of being re-elected. Some people have observed that the this is due to social media and the way that it allows greater prominence to the nasty and stupid than ever before. Nastiness and stupidity are evident in this thread so I don't think the observation is wide of the mark. Most people in politics, global, local or national are basically decent and committed to public service. You must have a thick skin to choose the life but even for the most hidebound it must be very hard on a daily basis to be accused of being venal, corrupt, dishonest or incompetent by people with zero insight into the work you do. 20 years ago people banging on about politicians in this unpleasant and unjustified manner would have lost their audience as everyone else moved to a different part of the pub. Now they are an unavoidable part of public discourse. So from me its a big thank you to all those people of whatever political views, and particularly Cllr Lambert, who care enough about their community to put their head above the parapet and try to make our lives better. Even if you don't agree with the way they are doing it, if you don't give them basic respect you are thoroughly reprehensible. |
