Does anyone know if there is a statutory minimum width for a road with a carriageway in each direction? I have looked online but can't find a definite answer. I followed a 65 down from Kew Bridge to Brentford yesterday and it's clear that the new cycleway has reduced the carriageway so that there is barely enough room. The offside wheels of the bus were straddling the central white line and the nearside wheels were less than a foot from the kerb. This morning two doubledeckers going in opposite directions were only just able to get past each other. This evening there was a near miss between a van and a car going in opposite directions - simply because there is now so little roadspace left. It's not helped by the fact that there are sections of the kerb which suddenly jut out. It's like an obstacle course. If I were designing a road in an urban area I'd prioritise public transport and pedestrian safety. I'm all in favour of segregated cycle lanes where space permits but it seems to me that this section of the cycleway could well have the effect of compromising the safety of pedestrians and other road users. But I suppose that doesn't matter as long as the cycle lobby gets what it wants. I'd also be interested to know the width of the redesigned carriageway at its narrowest points - perhaps Guy might have the answer? |
