Hmm, some flawed logic there. The self-service tills at Osterley are terrible. They are hyper sensitive and are forever stopping during a checkout. Older people seem to particularly struggle with them. It results in longer queues and slower service. Plus the shop staff still have to be around to rectify glitches. Alcohol or other restricted items still need approval. If there are too few staff available at busy times then it increases delay. The other problem with Tesco is the shelf labels aren’t always updated, so offers still seem to be on when the opposite is true. If you see this on a staffed till you can sort it out there and then, otherwise you face the joys of another queue at customer services. I can’t speak for other households but our wastage is very low, usually a result of ‘fresh’ produce being less ‘fresh’ than the use by date indicates. More shopping trips can actually lead to more impulse buys, and that in itself can create more wastage. Perhaps Tesco will invest in better technology to improve things at Osterley, but given the profits posted by the company maybe retaining more staffed tills isn’t such a financial stretch. It’s actually quite nice to have that human interaction in a shop! |
