We used one for parent who was blind. It took two of us to negotiate getting him anywhere - dropping off and quite often also with wheelchair and then parking car. It was an exhausting but very worthwhile task and it made getting to hospital appointments much easier even though we sometimes couldn't find any parking space nearby and had to walk a long way to pick the car up. It has always rather amused and irritated me that as soon as you are older and finding it more difficult to travel on public transport - hanging onto and pirouetting on high overhead straps and being rushed by penguins-on-speed type commuters and the gap and the drop between tube or step and platform or pavement seems to increase and jolt your spine when you step off - you have the offer of free or reduced price travel on it. That and the terribly dangerous state of the pavements you need to take yourself along before you get to a station/stop. It is just the wrong way around. It is worth knowing too that not all Councils have the same rules... so you could drive into another borough and fall foul of the rules. |
