I followed a refuse lorry today. Not a Hounslow one but an Ealing one. Apart from the extreme danger of an operative being decapitated by a lifting bin, the compactor, not the operatives are responsible for the amount of litter. As it operates it simply blows back light material straight out the back. This is a brand new truck not a year old. I've seen the same thing happen with the new Hounslow trucks which are the same. As a footnote. Wheelie bins are only safe for purpose for a maximum of 3 years. The plastic becomes brittle and fails which can be catastrophic when hooked up to the machine. H&S advisory recommends bins are replaced on a 3 yearly basis. Has this been budgeted for? With the cost of the trucks, the bins and the extra fuel as well as what must be huge additional insurance costs for both operatives and risk to passers by etc, I'm struggling to work out what the cost savings can possible be. If any at all. One big con by waste companies and their associate spin offs.? Surely someone has videoed this? |
