We can't give up on such an important issue. We must all take individual responsibility and continue to press for improvements in local arrangements. Information on recycling rates is not easy to find. However the latest data (for 2014/15 I believe) show that Hounslow was 281st in the national league table of 351 local authotities. The proportion of Hounslow's household waste sent for recycling, reuse and composting was 33.8%. Hounslow themselves put the current figure at 35% with a target of 50% by 2020. Figures published in December 2016 showed that the household recycling rate for England as a whole dropped for the first time - from 44.8% in 2014 to 43.9% in 2015.There appear to be several reasons for this including declining markets for recycled products, the impact of austerity on local authorities, and inadequate information for householders. Recycling rates are measured in relation to the total weight (not volume) of household waste. Some have suggested an alternative based on carbon savings. The total weight of waste produced by households in England has declined slightly in recent years, despite population increases. This may be partly explained by the reduced amount of newsprint and the substitution of plastic for glass and metal containers. The reduction in newsprint is partly offset by all that cardboard that is used to deliver our online purchases. Following the widespread introduction of charges for garden waste collection I wonder how much more of this now ends up in the wheelie for general rubbish from where it goes to landfill and produces damaging methane gas.My filled garden waste bags are usually the heaviest component by far of all the waste we produce (closely followed by beer and wine bottles). I know that publicity is expensive but it would be so useful to have regular feedback from LBH on how we are all doing ... and please, as has happened so often in the past, don't present the feedback in a form which puts all the blame on residents. |
