''It is virtually impossible to remove him from his post if he does not want to go - does this perhaps remind you of another Labour Leader? '' Surely if the Labour group wanted to elect another leader they could do - viz the incidence where Ken Livingstone replaced Andrew Mackintosh as the GLC Labour Leader and thus Council Leader in 1981, which appeared to be against Mr Mackintosh's wishes. So the responsibility is clearly partly that of the Labour group as a whole and not just Mr Curran. The concern about Mr Curran is that his version of events on the night Mr Slattery was arrested does not exactly concur with others, and councillors of both parties should at least be asking whether this falls within a reasonable margin of error or not. |
