Lots of Helicopters operate around Manahattan, with I think a lot more crashes than London's record. I do not see tall buildings as a problem with the Heathrow flightpath, they are at 5 to 4 thousand feet over central London. c.2000ft over Brentford on the landing system approach path. One other point is that London appears to be a major crossroad for high level flights, from the continent to the Americas and from Europe into British airports (Birmingham, Leeds, Luton, Stansted) etc. At any one times there are aircraft over London flying at between 1000 and 400000 feet.
