We in London have been lucky. Extremely lucky. For decades. Some of that luck is made. We have first rate air traffic controllers and the CAA is very well run. And well ogranised air corridors. Here, West of London, there have been a number of aircraft come down. This was in an era where aircraft were less safe and reliable. Whilst safety has improved hugely, it can still happen. Technical and training improvements have been partly cancelled out by the acts and potential threat of terrorists. Had Trident Papa India taken off on the easterly runway it would have ploughed into Boston Manor. The same with a few flights from Northolt . All of the crashes ended in fields. Only those souls on board perished which was bad enough. If those accidents happen now, it could be different, some of those crash sites are now housing estates and business centres. We want taller buildings, we want helicopters, we want a major airport. But tall buildings on airport approaches are not a good idea. Other cities in the world simply do not allow the two to mix. If it's plain common sense for these cities. Why is it such a problem here? |
