The biggest difficulty today with sales of social housing is that these days only the lucky few are allocated properties they might like to buy if they could afford it. Due to the previous RTB policy many of the better council properties have already been sold. I have no objection to a policy where government gives incentives to buy to people who have a good record as tenants, in a manner similar to the schemes that assist nurses, teachers etc. This could include access to funds for a deposit at favourable interest rates, government guarantees on mortgages and so on. However, if a sale is to be made it should be at market value or be on a shared ownership basis. |
