Stephanie, You make some good points in your post of 08:11. I'm not going to attempt to justify any of the Iraq saga (apart from what I said earlier about MPs being misled, which isn't a justification anyway). I don't know what it is about Labour Governments. They do some great things on a range of issues from investment in public services to pioneering equality intiatives (the original Race Relations Act of 1968 comes to mind as an example, subsequently updated in 2000), yet it seems that each term of Labour office is marked by something horrendous. In the 1960s, it was Harold Wilson's support for LBJ's war in Vietnam, and the passing by the same Labour Government of the most racist immigration act in British political history. And in 2003, it was Iraq. The choice that faces the voters of Brentford & Isleworth in the coming general election, however, is between a Labour MP with great expertise and experience of the health service (as well as a solid record on equality issues) or a Tory candidate who is quite happy to publicly associate herself with a local authority which, among much else, has slashed £2.3 from the education budget and made 400 of its own staff redundant. |
