Everybody in hospital also needs a friend or two!  With the shortages in staff in can be difficult to keep in touch with the outside world.  We found that there was an expensive and complicated phone and TV system (when it worked).  One parent could not see the flashing button and the other could not hear the buzzer. - and that presumes that they could work the system which is unlikely.  Elsewhere there has been a cordless phone which sometimes works if the conversations can be heard. Oh for a simple way of staying in touch which everyone understands so you can bring with you the requested needs/clean clothes /and work with the physio to reinforce exercises and the way to transfer from bed to chair to walker in order to expedite recovery and release. It is completely random the number of older people able to keep themselves in touch by mobile, email and text.  Numbers of mobiles owned are bandied around.  The number which just live in drawers is never mentioned as it can't possibly be known!
