That's great that something has been found for this gentleman. There used to be respite care available but many Councils no longer provide this. Where a couple is involved it is difficult to know how dependent one is on the other until they are separated. With one set of parents one was blind and the other deaf. So one did all the reading and the other all the hearing. Hospital was a problem with the one at home unable to hear what was said in telephone calls with the hospital. It can take some tenacity to learn how to use hearing aids but is worth it. Action on Hearing Loss used to try to find a volunteer to help and encourage you to get used to them. Your senses are very important to your memory. It is worth trying to keep those appointments remembering that the NHS does not always offer everyone hearing aids - or two hearing aids. The loud TV can also be a problem for neighbours and visitors! Until you spend time you may not realise just how difficult the situation may have become. We had a form from the GP which had to be filled in with lots of info and to which we had attached the print-out for meds. You can get extra print-outs from the doctor but you do need to know whether all the meds on there are currently being taken according to prescription. This has space for you to name the GP and other consultants. It also has space for you to put who the Emergency Services should contact in an emergency and what sort of care you want if you are taken into hospital.. This we were told to stick on the fridge door. Many people do not realise that hospitals like you to take your medication with you when you go into hospital. This is easier for the person accompanying to A&E to deal with than the clipboard bearer enquiring whether each arrival wants to be resuscitated or not before there has been any diagnosis which makes it feel as if there are deliberate gaps being created for you to fall through when vulnerable. |
