Jennifer - you have stumbled into the mess that is social care here.  The lack of it and the lack of joined up systems cause and have caused fear and lack of understanding and breakdown of what is there and what works. The backup is needed so that neighbours and the community can work together with the authorities to provide the support for those who are vulnerable when they need help.  The majority want to stay independent as long as they can - which can make it difficult for everyone because of the lack of easy and official help.

GPs were given the responsibility of leading but as we knew they would be they are overwhelmed. I thought that the ambulance service automatically asked about dependants.  Don't they now?

I made an attempt to contact Sharon for you but the number I found did not work. The email remains unanswered.  There should be someone we can call.  Do your neighbours have emergency pendants/wristbands.  These are a good method of getting in touch in the event of a fall etc.  The emergency services are called if registered neighbours can't be raised in case of a fall etc. It does depend on neighbourly behaviour and good back up for neighbours for the system to work.
