Google Earth has historic aerial photos, including a set from 1945. Looking at the grainy shots of the area from 1945 I don't think I can see the Space Maker building there then, but only a few other shapes on that site. See what you think ! Perhaps that is the site of the demonstration yard - but the building was put up in the 50's ? I recently came across (for other purposes !) the documents for the planning application for the Sky studios site biomass combined heat and power plant and their Environmental Statement (May 2010) includes as Appendix A a report by Envirocheck on the mapped history of the site. This area includes the Pyrene site and shows that the Spacemaker building was not originally there - but the yard at the back of the main Pyrene factory has the word "tanks". There is also a much better aerial photo from 1948 (page 129/216) which shows no Spacemeaker building (and a much later Russian military map that does have it). If you are curious, the documents are on the Hounslow Planning system with reference 00558/A/P35 (but the file is around 200Mb !) The war time maps also show a "Folding Boat Manufactory" north of the Great West Road behind the Firestone building. I hadn't heard of that one before. Must read James's book! |
