Dear Paul We moved here from Stamford Brook 3 years ago, we live in one of the houses on The Island, and we love it. The High St may not be redeveloped in our lifetime (despite the laudable efforts of Andrew Dakers and many others) but you have all the essentials and surprising hidden gems like The Bijou Box.  The shopkeepers are charming and will be delighted to have your custom and there are some really good restaurants (we like the family run La Rosetta). It has a safe feel to it as well - have a walk round The Island and The Butts and you'll see what I mean. Our teenagers find getting around really easy - the bus services are excellent, as is the train service into Waterloo. Don't let the roadworks put you off! All the best.
