Local Papers when good had the means to report exactly what councils were up to early enough and clearly enough to allow residents and businesses to react.

True Transparency when the word was simply not needed.

Newspapers also did vox pops and good analysis which regularly exposed the flaws in facts and details announced to justify things.

Govt, Health service and Councils took advantage of the decline of Newspapers and created Press Offices that are simply blockers for Journalists and to curb the freedom of diligent officers to be able to speak directly. Councillors and MPs simply had to be available.

Now even journalists cannot get a word without layers of chaff.

You know somethings wrong when so much is mentioned about Transparency and Freedom of Information etc etc..
