'Brentford high street is a dump'

Possibly because the previous generation of council planning officers allowed utterly inappropriate concrete blocks to dotted throughout the place, dragging the whole area down into a vision of cheap and brutalistic architecture.

'Anything is better than what's there now' is so wrong and so shortsighted.  The first proposal for Morrisons had a block the height of the old police station concrete tower, the second took a couple of stories off in a 'we've adjusted it so give us permission' approach, the third will probably do the same.  At this rate it'll be the fifth or sixth revision before it actually meets the planning requirements.  And when it is appropriate it'll still make the developer a handsome profit.  Not a fat cat greedy as-much-as humanly-possible profit, but a responsible company profit.

Brentford will be Croydon or Twickenham, just depends on who has the most backbone.
