When I was in the civil service the powers that were wanted to impose a 'dress code'. This lead to the PCS T.U. taking the mandarins on - with the outcome that unless the management were willing to cough up a contribution or provide clothing then it could not be imposed. I believe this was supported in court - with the result that the only things that couldn't be worn were jeans, the imposition of men having to wear ties was also found to be discrimiatory and they backed off. So have the union actually tested this out? It was some years ago so it is possible things have changed, but it seems to me if an employer wants you to wear corporate dress then it's up to them to provide it. |
