I wonder if they did any kind of impact analysis. How many of the 16 night flights are "scheduled" to land between 0430 and 0500 ? If it is 8 (and my experience is there is usually an initial rush which tails off after 5.15) then we could end up with a welcome silence from 0430 to 0500 followed by 24 in the next hour (a 50% increase in the night flights). I suppose it would be worse if they maintain a couple of flights at 0430 to wake us up and then still pile the rest into the 0500 hour together with the equivalent number of "brought-forward" flights. BAA have now published the CAA ERCD report on the noise impact of the Phase I trials. I found it hard to fight my way through the technicalities and there are a whole series of contour maps for 8hr, 1 hr, number of noisy events and time duration of noisy events. However, the nuisance of erratic disturbances during the quiet of the respite period is not really brought out. The average daily increase of 5.5 flights in the respite period (on top of the average of flights breaking respite that happened before the trial started) only adds two minutes of noise a day......... http://www.heathrowairport.com/static/Heathrow_Noise/Downloads/PDF/London_Heathrow_Operational_Freedoms-Phase_1-Trial-Effect_on_noise.pdf |
