Steve, just to remove any political bias to the post, I was instructed (in around 2003/2004 time) by my then Director to stop posting on these forums when I was employed by LBH, following what I was advised was either a complaint or a general "is this a good idea ?" query from either a Councillor or Councillors. Whilst at the time I was pretty shocked, in hindsight I totally concur with my Director's decision and if I was in his shoes now I'd also forbid any of my staff from posting anything on such websites. The problem is that it's impossible for the Council to control what an individual posts on such websites, and no matter how sensible the employee is, people can twist things to reflect badly on the Council. If you or I send an email from work it should have a big disclaimer at the bottom, and letters from the Council have/should have been checked by management prior to being sent out. You can't do that with website contributions and, as I found, the more helpful you try to be the more it tends to bounce back in your face. |
