I would like to believe that Francis Maude is simply a moron, but the cynic in me thinks it is worse than that. The government is quite clearly trying to whip up a "Dunkirk spirit, us against them" mentality, "them" in this case being the tanker drivers, and at the same time send a message to the drivers that there is no prospect of them giving in. It is as though they are relishing the prospect of a conflict in much the same way as Thatcher relished the conflict with the miners. It is probably the closest thing Cameron is ever likely to get to his own Falklands moment, not that there is any real comparison to be made. Personally I think he and his government are seriously misjudging the public mood, and now they have made themselves look amateurish and stupid to boot. This government is really beginning to annoy the hell out of me, but what is more annoying still is that there is no bloody alternative. |
