'Back in the day it was not unknown for an active local party or campaigning group to distribute up to seven or eight different leaflets during an election campaign. Clearly that is not considered necessary when the opposition is so feeble and disinterested. My postal vote is still unposted. How curious that somebody who was once so heavily involved in local politics should even at this late hour be undecided as to how, or whether, to vote.' Absolutely - us too! Certainly we could reckon on at least 20 - 30 people for each canvassing/leafletting session - it was literally all hands to the pump, and there would be 'sorry you were out cards' and last thing on election eve the last big push to stick a leaflet through as many letterboxes as possible reminding people to vote, with your own candidates names. Either the membership nowadays is merely expected to turn up at selection meetings and have no say in the ward or how their councillors are performing and holding them to account or complacency has set in. Either way - fings ain't wot they used to be. I haven't seen one Labour - or Tory window bill either. Local democracy is all the poorer for that too, because it got people engaged and interested. |
