| Not much has been seen of Labour council candidates around Isleworth but one irate householder has taken a dim view of a Labour leaflet claiming to have 'helped save Park Rd. allotments.' There is no dispute that it was local residents, allotment holders and The Isleworth Society who did all the heavy lifting of getting the application thrown out at a public inquiry only AFTER Hounslow's officers had recommended approval originally. We now know that the Northumberland Estate has again come back for another bite at the cherry - and this second try was again recommended for approval by officers, but overturned by committee members. Again, things look set for yet another appeal. It is not helpful for the planning authority to recommend an approval as it undermines the argument of their own authority should it land up at an inquiry. It would be of more use were councillors to get involved with these issues much earlier in the process. It's all very well putting out leaflets with photos of grinning councillors holding banners at a protest march organised by local people and claiming to 'have helped save' the allotments - a lot more effort a lot earlier might have been of more benefit, but of course there might not be any cameras to record that! |
