Brick was the most common material and in this part of London the London Stock which is shades of yellow to burnt umber. Has a degree of vibrance to it's colour but weathers down after 80-90 years. A few other face bricks also light in shade are used and a good example is the house at the junction of the A4 and Windmill road which has just been renovated. The pretty drab and weather face bricks have been cleaned probably for the first time in over 100 yrs and are superb and make an immediate uplifting impact. These are most commonly are used in the local housing stock and were made in Bedfordshire and often mixed with terracotta red facing bricks and carved bricks for decorative effect. Older buildings have an earlier version of the common London Stock and are either Red or darkish brown in appearance. They are usually more yellow if cleaned but are often to soft for any treatment. Examples are dotted around Brentford. Grey, black and some other current choices are contemporary and do not sit well with surroundings. Often chosen to hide the poor aesthetic architectural values of the buildings but in this case to reduce costs and no doubt to side step the issues of cladding. |
