It takes 40 years for a sapling to produce the same degree of effectiveness to the air as a mature tree. The added problem is that with so many high developments in the vicinity, it is unlikely that any sapling will reach maturity. So much is focused on the pollution of vehicles which is in year on year decline that it completely obscures the raft of ecological issues that pose far more a threat to human health than much of the scare facts that the Mayor and TfL are so keen to peddle. Light, dust disruption of air circulation, propagation of mould spores and huge energy wastage are all products of building of 5 storeys and more, yet not a word from the Mayor and his chums on the damages this imposes on health. And yes, there is actually a stronger link to asthma being caused by spores from mould and damp and sorry to say some common varieties of tree than there is from vehicle emissions. Until the whole issue embraces the whole range of issues to the environment, nothing will change. Ripping out mature trees is a small but significant part of this. |
