It's similar to a type of chewing tobacco, not like Khaat which is similar to cannabis and can be bought freely as no-one can decide if it is a drug or not. As far as I know it is no more harmful than chewing gum. What is harmful is the increased saliva and the need to spit the stuff out which in a developed urban society is not acceptable and something western countries used as a starting point to eradicate the diseases which riddled our society. It is popular with various ethnic groups from the sub-continent but usually amongst the lower poorly educated and poverty line populus. This is a trend and, like the rise in bushmeat is not something that was imported by immigrants in the past. It seems to be far more recent. Either way, If LBH can send out enforcement officers at 8am on a sunday morning to ticket cars encroaching yellow lines in quiet residential streets then they can jolly well send their enforcement officers out to deal with a real problem that is a potential health risk and costly to clean up. |
