| I did an Urban cycling cause in an Inner London borough some years back and it was rather good. Based on common sense and the important thing of spacial awareness, and to expect the unexpected. The same as when driving a motorised vehicle. It included moving into the middle lane and spacing between vehicles or hanging back with HGVs to be in direct sight of their mirrors at junctions. To not get too close to parked vehicles and to be alert as to a drop opening or indeed the wind catching van or truck doors. And to signal clearly, always acknowledge your awareness of a vehicle behind and use the same level of courtesy as is expected of tested vehicle drivers. That and a few other tips were both enlightening and borne out to be very useful in the ensuring years. What is saddening is how very few apply such basic sensibilities. The new highway code seems to have erred to the less sensible and not taken up many of the better practices that have been put forward. Baffling but hardly surprising in a society of such contradictive but common sense deprived culture. |
