At one time all parties would have tellers outside polling stations - the purpose of asking for your polling number was for the details to go back to your committee rooms where your number would be crossed off, so that they would know you had voted. I don't know how it's done now, but certainly no-one knew we had postal votes - which also used to be noted on canvass cards - and neither was the fact we told canvassers twice we'd already voted noted down. But then again I didn't see that many tellers - we used to man the polling stations all day. |
