| This is where I struggle to wear my "planning consultant" hat and my "local resident" hat at the same time. The Fountain Leisure Centre, particularly the pools, is outdated and already overcrowded at busy times. We don't go at all now, we used to go regularly (particularly my other half) but got sick of turning up when there was either some fault with the water temperature, or the pool couldn't open first thing on a Sunday because some staff hadn't turned up, and because generally the changing rooms etc. are pretty grim. When you think the stadium development is 900 flats, on top of the recent Kew Bridge development, Wheatstone House redevelopment next door, 'Heritage Walk' (most inappropriately named development I've come across) and so on, that's circa 1500 new units within 5 minutes walk of the Leisure Centre. Given the poor condition of the Leisure Centre at the moment, what it's going to be like when all those extra residents start using it ?. And this is where Community Infrastructure Levy is supposed to come in, where developers pay sums in the region of £100-£200 per square metre of new resi floorspace (and it is non negotiable) and the money is supposed to be spent by the Council on local infrastructure, which should mean the area gets a brand new top of the range leisure facility in the next 5-10 years. I won't hold my breath... |
