I understand it was just a few of the usual Nimbys in our street and in Grosvenor Road who did not want a 'druggie and yob' attraction located near "their" Park or the extension of 'their' Garden. It's a real kick in the guts for the one thing that would be of benefit for a great many older local people who so far are overlooked when it comes to amenities. Having spoken to one of the Friends of the Park, it was scuppered by people who have not participated in the local Friends even though it is open to all locals with posters in the park having been up for months. This was apparently on the radar long before the friends as it was supposed to be part of the children's playground which was upgraded some years back now. But with things as they are, it was deemed ( and rather sensibly) unwise for an adult gym to be located near a children playground. Not just for the obvious reasons but also that people out of condition and carrying a few pounds can be a bit inhibited about taking the first steps to getting fitter and older kids can be vocally quite cruel as well. So the idea of a more discreet location was a good one. These gyms are designed to be silent and for those who have stopped counting their age! Clearly it was not explained and demonstrated clearly enough. It really should have been leafleted to all residents locally and options explained and a choice offered. All local residents should have had a say and that was the view of the person I spoke with. I think that's only fair. But what a bunch of spoilsports these people who seem to think the Park is exclusive to them simply because they live by it. It is a public place for all. And it needs to evolve for modern lifestyles. I hope the Friends are going to seek a proper wider consultation on this for all residents and not just the vocal few. Maybe we can have their stance on the issue? |
