Pavements are footpaths and not for kids on bikes or scooters. At least the bumps and gaps on pavements serve to unintended purposes. I1 You can hear some one on a skateboard or scooter coming 2. It keeps kids speed down. I have an elderly member of my family who died as a consequence of a 6 year old on a scooter colliding with him resulting in a broken leg and a head injury. That was on a smooth tarmac surface and he simply did not hear the out of control overfast kid approaching. Hardly malice a bad accident. But one that ought not to be encouraged with supersmooth fast surfaces. Tarmac is aslo very slippery under leaves and frost and in the summer melts and ruins carpets. It also has a very short life unless laid on very sound sub bases over 12" Tarmac is also porous and can start to smell of dog, fox and cat urine as well as hold the bacteria of faeces. It's why so many authorities have turned away from widespread use on older areas using it only where completely new footways are required where the sub base can be made to a deeper specification. Not a good idea when properly laid paving is so much more durable, safer and smarter. |
