I am a little surprised that in two weeks, nobody [other than Simon and Dawn’s appreciation of the views of the Thames] has singled out the waterways generally, which have made Brentford what it is. Those include both Thames and the Brent, and the canal that eventually connected Brentford to the heart of industrial England, when previously it had been ‘only’ a major port on the Thames with international connections. There are precious few places within major cities and their suburbs where marine life and landscape commingle so intimately with a town centre – and besides the current pleasures associated with these waterways as a backdrop to the modern town, the sheer depth of the history that this confluence of rivers engendered makes Brentford outstanding. The aforementioned memorial records a skeletal selection of notable events that should inspire an interest. There is nothing that makes a place quite as special as the feeling of being linked to so much of the wider world reaching back so far in time. |
