| Vanessa I am happy to stand corrected on the dates of the harassment that you unfortunately suffered, it is to be expected that your memory of this would be better than mine. However Robin's clear inference, without a jot of evidence to support his case, was that this scummy conduct was the work of the ICG. I assume the shotgun pellet was reported to the police at the time it happened? It would certainly appear to have been reported to Robin, although I had been completely unaware of it until he mentioned it yesterday. However the purpose of my post was to refute his quite blatant insinuation that this had anything to do with the ICG, indeed I consider it deplorable that he should want to try to extract political capital from your ordeal. It may come as a surprise to you but I actually have a certain amount of respect for the work that you did as a local councillor. I believe, indeed I know, that you worked very hard for individual constituents. It is also my honest belief that you were less impressive as an advocate for the wider community, but that is a personal opinion and there is a vast gulf between that and condoning, let alone sanctioning, acts of harassment or violence against you. I can truthfully state that if I had information of any such activity I would have no hesitation about reporting it to the police, and if necessary would give evidence in your support. You should not assume that your obvious personal bitterness towards me is reciprocated. I also took the opportunity to reiterate my belief, virtually to the point of certainty, that whilst your own ordeal was quite real the alleged attack on the property of a Labour candidate hours before the press deadlines on the week of the 2006 local election was nothing but a sick publicity stunt, and a pretty crappy one at that. That Robin is able to suggest with confidence that it was an ICG-inspired "attack", despite himself living several miles away and by his own admission having never even met the alleged victim, only convinces me more not only of this fact but also of the complicity of the party itself at a higher level. I am treating Robin's post as a threat and a warning of what we are to expect during next year's campaign, when New Labour's chances of winning will be even more remote than they were on the last occasion. Especially in the light of the fact that the same people would appear to have been reselected as candidates (a reward for their conduct last time?). There are limits as to what one can actually do to prepare for this kind of campaigning, but he and his colleagues should be aware that we will be watching them very closely indeed and if any slip-ups are made we will be quite single-minded and ruthless in pursuing the approproate authorities to ensure that an example is made of them. Our local community deserves better than to have political debate and activity reduced to this trashy level by people who refuse to accept the verdict of the electorate in an honest and dignified way. |
