| It is noteworthy that when Simon talks of a potential political scandal to be uncovered he refers to the issue of Julian Bell's housing, something that happened a long time ago, in another borough and was pretty thoroughly covered by the press (I don't live in Ealing but remember reading about it). There are genuine scandals about this council currently including the preposterous 'fly-tipping' fine policy and they also get reported. Simon and Raymond may be right that there is another layer of even worse behaviour in local government which the press is failing to pick up on. However, they should perhaps direct their fire initially at the opposition whose main job it is to find things out and secondly on themselves. They are constantly telling us that bad things are happening in a non-specific way but always fail to come up with details. These days, five minutes drafting an FoI request should be enough to uncover dark dealings that they might suspect. For now I choose to believe most of the council's dirty laundry has been exposed to public view. |
