Social media unfortunately can cause pile-ons in many cases because of the algorithms.  This can sadly turn one unjustified and untrue comment into something that an unsure reader thinks that everyone believes so therefore it must be true when it isn't.  Sometimes this is done deliberately to inflame situations and to control opinion.
