The Waste hierarchy starts with Reduce and the mantra was always Reduce Reuse & Recycle. Since the idea has been that we should all be reducing the amount of waste we make it seems logical that that should actually start with Refuse and Repair and Repurpose be added before the Recycle. In this age of Ebay and Gumtree and Freecycle it seems daft to take a lot of stuff somewhere for someone else to sort, when a lot of it can be organised ourselves. Trashnothing.com is an easy interface for Freecycle and Freegle where the person who wants something free has to collect. This saves the hassle and cost of wrapping and posting anything. You yourself can't possibly decide what others may or may not want as you will be surprised. You can also put Wants on this website. Don't forget that there are things you can take back to shops for them to deal with when you buy something else from them (particularly small electricals) and many shops will take back your larger elecrical white goods for a small fee when you order new electrical white goods from them. Check out www.westlondonwaste.gov.uk (This is our Waste Authority website.) The idea is that we should be moving from the old linear: buy-use-chuck economy to a circular economy. www.wrap.org.uk |
