I have wondered for quite a while why Local Authorites ( not just this one but all) use a big stick on residents over parked cars which don't pollute and use of cars which is inescapably the only way for a great deal of us to enable a living, yet do nothing about some of the new fads that are potentially 'green' but instead are adding to the issues.

As mentioned, Milk Floats. These go right back to when Horse and Cart floats were the norm. Hand driven electric floats date from the early 1920s and did the smaller rounds and electric from the 1930s and en masses by the 1950.  The whole Milk production and delivery system was hugely efficient. Everything was recycled and some depots used the steam from the boll washing and pastuerisiers to generate the recharging current via a turbine. Until Nationalisation of the Electricity supply put an edict to stop local generation.
But nonetheless this was all in place over 80 years ago.

Every last means was re-used.  Sensible and pragmatic.

So fast forward to today and we have supermarket delivery vans and lots of local courier delivery vans.
Are they electric?  No.  Are they hybrid? No

Many do a lot of deliveries with a lot of stop start but relatively low mileages.

Low enough to get through a day without a recharge.

Refrigeration units are a problem but hybrids can deal with that.

Working Vehicles could have solar panels on roofs but even a solar panel on a home would take 5 days to recharge a vehicle, the Out put is far too low for the cost and life span of the equipment.

But Van recharging points located where drivers can take their breaks in a safe environment surely ought to be factored into all new developments and space has ro be allowed for something which most of us now benefit from.

As for Norway, it cannot be compared. All of Norway apart from it's cities are run as communes. They almost all have HEP from Waterfalls. They pay very high taxes and have a first class care system and pensions are incredible.

They have a balanced population, small enough to be managed and provided for, yet big enough to be independent.

We have a completely different system here, overpopulating and a massive black economy with to many not paying their way fully. So nothing ever balances up.
