Interesting stories. I don't necessarily think the future of Brentford is all doom and gloom, but I think it's important that everyone, be it developers, the local authority and the public, is realistic in their expectations. People aren't going to flock to Brentford from afar, it isn't a 'destination'. The target should be to try to ensure that residents have everything to meet their day-to-day needs on their doorstep, so they're more likely to shop and enjoy leisure time within the town than going elsewhere. Effectively there needs to be offer that means that existing and new residents don't just get 95% of their supermarket deliveries online, only popping into a Sainsburys Extra for a pint of milk, don't either order a takeaway for delivery for another town or, when they go out, get on a bus or train to go elsewhere. At the moment the temptation to do all of the above is far too strong. |
